Postnatal Yoga Classes

One of the main concerns which many new mothers have after childbirth is this: “How do I get back to pre-pregnancy fitness and shape?” When a woman bears a child and becomes a mother, many things in life changes – from her physical body, her priorities, and obligations. Fortunately, postnatal yoga can be one good way address these issues.

Pregnancy and having a new baby can really take a toll on both the mother and child. After childbirth, the mother not only has to take care of the newborn, but also needs to heal herself physically, mentally and emotionally. When you attend a good post natal yoga class (which typically spans between 8 – 12 sessions over 2 to 3 months), you can slowly but surely build the strengths of your core muscles, lose the weight, and tone yourself back into pre-pregnancy shape.

Yoga is in fact, the ideal exercise for new mothers, because it is not as strenuous as many other forms of aerobic (cardio) or anaerobic exercises. Of course, these yoga sessions must be attended with discipline, together with a proper diet, as well as sufficient rest.

Benefits of Postnatal Yoga

Here are some benefits you can expect when you stick to a good yoga regime after childbirth:

  • Weight loss
  • Strengthen back, abdominal and pelvic muscles
  • Reduce aches in neck and shoulders
  • Improve posture
  • Relaxes the entire body, and rejuvenates the mind
  • Reduces fatigue

Starting Post Natal Yoga

Like many things you do during your pregnancy, it would be advisable to seek a doctor’s opinion before embarking on any exercise (this includes yoga) after your pregnancy. Remember, each person’s body changes differently, and a professional one-to-one opinion would be best to understand your readiness to undertake any exercise.

Also, remember that in the postpartum period, your body is in a state of transition, recuperation and recovery – so don’t expect yourself to go straight back to the flexibility and strength you had before pregnancy. During your classes, go only as far as you can!

Get Your Family and Kids Doing Yoga Too!

As you get back in shape after your pregnancy, remember that you can continue to use yoga as part of your life to maintain your fitness and stay toned. Once your kid is able to manage himself and walk on his or her own, you can attend yoga classes for children, where you can partner your child in various postures. Even if the entire family is joining in, there are family yoga classes to cater to that!
